Iron Bacteria are organisms that use iron as a source of energy and leave behind a red-orange slimy deposit.
Iron bacteria do not normally cause disease to humans, or animals, but are a nuisance micro-organism reducing water flow and blocking irrigation systems. This can result in irrigators losing productivity and potentially their crops. Stock and domestic bores can also face these problems.
The aim of the Iron Bacteria project is to investigate the extent and distribution of this bacteria across the Mallee Prescribed Wells Area. Information will then be passed to Mallee Prescribed Wells Area landholders with inairators on how to manage the problem.
The project is an initiative of the Mallee Water Resources Committee. A contractor was engaged to undertake a literature review and field research. A survey of licensees was undertaken to assess areas, which are at risk of iron bacteria problems. Several property owners were involved in sample collection for the analysis.
The River Murray Catchment Water Management Board along with levy funds collected from the Mallee Prescribed Wells Area are funding this project.
