South Australia has large areas of floodplain to manage along the length of the Murray but unfortunately there simply aren’t the resources available to manage everything. There is a significant focus on management for ecological outcomes through the delivery and management of environmental flows to floodplains (including wetlands). It is important that any investment made in floodplain management is undertaken in an informed way based on site prioritisation.
During 2006/07 a floodplain prioritisation project has been underway with a focus on establishing broad scale floodplain priorities on the basis of environmental values, threats to the floodplain and the opportunity to manage these threats. Once completed, the information arising from this project will provide an important tool to assist in environmental flow decision making processes for the SA MDB floodplain.
