The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board is coordinating community engagement and communications for the Chowilla Icon Site. An important mechanism for community engagement for the Chowilla project is through the input of the Chowilla Community Reference Committee (CRC), which was established in 2005 and continues to meet quarterly to provide a range of community views on the management decisions and investment options for the Chowilla Floodplain. The CRC provides advice to the Icon Site Manager and the Chowilla Coordinating Committee, particularly in relation to ecological objectives and trade-offs. In addition, the CRC provides ideas and guidance regarding community consultation processes and is encouraged to contribute to the program via information flow back to their social networks.
As part of the Communications Plan numerous community information forums, including tours of the floodplain have been undertaken. The project has also benefited from local radio, television and print coverage.
