Wastewater Management and Re-Use

The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board recognizes that to move towards more sustainable water use within the region, alternative water sources must be considered. Wastewater from both domestic and industrial sources represents a guaranteed – and presently under utilized – water supply.

An investigation of opportunities for wastewater re-use in the SA Murray-Darling Basin commenced in 2005 to help shape and accelerate investment in wastewater re-use programs.

This project supports three major objectives:

  • Match wastewater supply, from both domestic and industrial sources, with beneficial uses;
  • Maximise beneficial re-use of recycled water; and
  • Reduce the demand for raw or mains water.

Detailed outcomes of the project are provided in the following reports:

  • Investigation of opportunities for wastewater re-use in the Murray Darling Basin, SA, Milestone 1 Report (3.8Mb)
  • Investigation of opportunities for wastewater re-use in the Murray Darling Basin, SA, Milestone 2 Report (1.7mb)
    • Appendix A1 (26kb)
    • Appendix A2 (65kb)
    • Appendix B1 (54kb)
    • Appendix B2 (75kb)
    • Appendix C1 (650kb)

Business Case for Future Investment

A business case for future investment has been prepared drawing upon some of the key recommendations of the Milestone 2 Report within the document:

  • New Water: Re-using wastewater in the Murray-Darling Basin, SA (3.3mb)

(Note for printing – The Booklet comprise of 6 x A4 pages folded to A4. To assemble the booklet correctly: print - Double Sided, Pages: 1, 3, 6, 4, 2, 5 in precisely that order)

Fact Sheets

Two case studies to demonstrate the true cost of wastewater management and re-use:

  • Domestic Wastewater: - Strathalbyn Racing Club and Alexandrina Council (TO BE AVAILABLE FROM May 2008)
  • Winery wastewater: - Tandou Wines (TO BE AVAILABLE FROM May 2008)

Fact Sheet to assist industry prepare Water Efficiency Management Plans to save on water costs, reduce water consumption and improve efficiency through better managing business water use.

  • Water Efficiency Management Plans (TO BE AVAILABLE FROM May 2008)

Wastewater Treatment and Re-Use Forum for Local Government and Industry

The Wastewater Treatment and Re-use Forum for Local Government and Industry was held on 30th October 2007 at the Berri Resort Hotel.

Approximately 130 delegates from Local Government, government agencies, manufacturing /food processing industry, wastewater treatment industry, consulting and community groups attended the Forum.
