The Regional NRM Plan

Overview

In 2004 the State Government of South Australia introduced new legislation aimed at delivering integrated natural resource management across the state. The Natural Resources Management Act 2004 (the Act) provides the framework for the Board’s operations and requires that the Board prepares a Regional Natural Resources Management Plan (Regional NRM Plan) for the SA Murray-Darling Basin region.

The preparation of a Regional NRM Plan creates an opportunity to develop an integrated vision for the future of natural resources within the region, and to develop the strategies and actions the Board proposes to implement with its partners to help realise that vision. The Board will seek broad community and industry input into the development of the Plan.

The Regional NRM Plan is the Board's blueprint for outcomes and will address environmental, social and economic issues and priorities relevant to ensuring sound natural resources management for the SA MDB NRM region.

The Initial NRM Plan

To enable the Board to operate while the Regional NRM Plan is under preparation, the Act makes provision for the preparation of an Initial Plan.

The Initial Plan has been prepared on the basis that it is bringing together existing plans and programs, established under the now repealed former legislation, as well as the current integrated natural resources management plan for the region, all of which will continue to be implemented while the Board prepares its comprehensive Regional NRM Plan. Most of these existing plans and programs have been developed with involvement of the community.

The Board initially has adopted the goals of the previous Boards within the region.

Catchment Plan

The Board's Catchment Plan is a 5 year plan that will seek to improve the health of catchment waterways and the sharing of water resources to meet economic, social and environmental needs.
