Youth Council

ATTENTION ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Are you interested in the environment?

Do you want to take action?

Do you want to meet other like minded students?

Do you want to have some fun?!?

If yes, then the River Murray Youth Council is for you!

The River Murray Youth Council is a forum for Year 8-12 year olds to meet after school hours to discuss environmental issues important to you.  The Council is student driven with students being supported on their journey by adult mentors from the natural resource management field.

There are currently 25 Year 8-11 students from Karoonda, Coomandook, Mannum, Murray Bridge, Strathalbyn and Mt Barker involved  in the Lower Murray Youth Council and 12 High school students from Waikerie High, Glossop High, Loxton High and the Riverland Special School involved in the Upper Murray Youth Council.

Youth Council Members

The Lower Murray Youth Council identified the drought, Wellington Weir and global warming as their main issues of concern whilst the Upper Murray River Murray Youth Council identified the drought, climate Change, ecotourism, and river history as topics of interest.

Both branches of the River Murray Youth Council will learn more about their chosen issues and present workshops at the International River Health Conference in Canberra in October 2007.

Junior Youth Environment Forum (Year 5-7)

The Lower Murray Junior Youth Environment Group is aimed for Year 5-7 students thoughtful the Lower Murray Catchment who are passionate about the environment.  It provides hands-on learning in the form of workshops and tours, resulting in the students developing school action plans.  There are currently 50 students from 12 schools throughout the Lower Murray involved in the group (the Forum is limited to four students per school)

Youth Council Members

This initial Junior Youth Environment Group forum sets the scene, encourages the students to begin thinking about the issues and provided students with an opportunity to meet others and start forming networks.

During the second and third forum, students learn in depth about their chosen environmental issue and develop tailored school action plans. The last forum is an opportunity for the students to present the progress of their action plans to the rest of the schools.

To get your school involved, contact Pippa Kerby (8532 3573)
